are-able Foundation & Kiwanis Warrnambool: Empowering Inclusion, One Wave at a Time

The Kiwanis Club of Warrnambool is making a real difference in the community, breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone can experience the joy of the ocean. Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the are-able Foundation, the club has successfully funded the purchase of a Mobi-Chair—a floating beach wheelchair designed to provide safe and seamless beach-to-water access for individuals with disabilities.
And on Saturday, March 1st, this incredible initiative became a reality when the chair was used at the Disability Surfers Association event in Warrnambool! For the first time, participants who previously faced accessibility challenges were able to experience the thrill of the waves in a safe and supported way.
“With the support of the are-able Foundation, Kiwanis Warrnambool has enhanced the resources of the All Abilities Surfing Group by purchasing a Mobi-Chair. This chair can be easily wheeled from the vehicle to the ocean, where it will float, providing a beach experience that was previously inaccessible to individuals with disabilities.”— Diane Riordon, Secretary, Kiwanis Warrnambool
This life-changing equipment is available for use by the All Abilities Surfing Association and Merri River School, allowing more children and individuals with mobility challenges to enjoy the freedom of the sand and sea. With Warrnambool’s stunning coastline being a major attraction, this initiative ensures that the beach is truly for everyone.
Kiwanis Warrnambool, a dedicated not-for-profit organisation, has always focused on improving the lives of children and families facing hardship. The Mobi-Chair is yet another way they are fostering inclusion and creating opportunities for all members of the community.
This initiative has been met with overwhelming support, ranking as the top-rated Warrnambool-based application for the 2024 are-able Foundation grants. With its first successful use at the Disability Surfers Association event, the impact of this project is already being felt in the community—helping people experience the joy and freedom of the ocean like never before.
The are-able Foundation is proud to support projects like this—initiatives that promote inclusion, independence, and equal access for people of all abilities.
