SLES Participants Visit WOW Program: A Journey Towards Growth and Job Readiness

On May 31, 2024, are-able’s SLES (School Leaver Employment Supports) participants had the exciting opportunity to visit the Working On Within (WOW) program studio in Mildura. The WOW program, established by Don Carrazza and Jimmy Hadfield in 2015, offers a holistic, values-based approach to personal and professional development. Originally built on their extensive martial arts knowledge, WOW now empowers individuals of all ages with life skills that go beyond self-defence, focusing on self-discipline, conflict resolution, and personal growth.

The visit was organised by Senior Employment Preparation & Engagement Consultant Ashley Chambers as part of are-able’s initiative to offer enriching experiences to SLES participants. Jimmy Hadfield, one of WOW’s founders, welcomed the group by sharing his inspiring journey and the motivations behind the program. He explained how WOW has helped many individuals and community groups by promoting values like respect, trust, and persistence, and how these values are essential to personal and professional success.

Participants had the opportunity to explore the studio, learning about the tools and equipment used in WOW’s training. Ashton Thomson, one of the attendees, even demonstrated his skills on the reaction board, revealing that he had previously been involved in the program.

WOW and are-able have forged a strong partnership, working together to develop a six-week program tailored specifically for SLES participants. This collaboration aims to help young individuals, particularly those with disabilities, develop essential skills and confidence to become job ready. The program includes modules on anger management, dealing with anxiety, leadership, and hygiene, empowering participants with lifelong skills.

This industry visit was an important step in connecting participants with programs that offer real-life growth opportunities. The WOW program has had a profound impact on the local community, supporting individuals in both mainstream and disability sectors. By providing conflict resolution training and self-defence skills, the program prepares participants not only for employment but also for life.
