Ian’s Path to Recovery and Meaningful Employment in Bendigo

Ian’s Path to Recovery and Meaningful Employment in Bendigo

At 26, Ian’s journey has been marked by challenges. With a mild learning disability and a history of alcohol addiction, Ian had limited work experience and struggled to find direction. His past was defined by a lack of support and clear goals, making his future seem uncertain.

Ian’s life took a positive turn when he connected with Jacinta, an Employment Consultant at are-able. Jacinta recognised Ian’s potential and guided him through a crucial phase of his life. She supported Ian’s commitment to an alcohol withdrawal program and took the time to explore his interests in outdoor work and gardening.

Working closely with team leader Luke, Jacinta identified a unique opportunity for Ian—a groundskeeper position at The Bendigo Golf Club. The role seemed perfect for Ian’s interests, offering a chance to work in a supportive environment.

Understanding Ian’s health challenges, Jacinta and Luke engaged with the Golf Club to ensure they were prepared to support Ian’s rehabilitation. The employer’s commitment to creating a nurturing and understanding work environment played a crucial role in Ian’s successful transition into employment.

At The Bendigo Golf Club, Ian found a role that not only suited his skills but also provided him with a sense of purpose. As a groundskeeper, Ian maintains the course and enjoys driving the golf buggy to collect golf balls—a task that he finds both engaging and fulfilling.

Since gaining employment, Ian has remained alcohol-free, significantly improving his health and overall well-being. His new role has given him personal confidence, a sense of belonging, and a renewed outlook on life. Ian is thriving at work, making new friends, and feeling valued as part of the team

Additionally, this newfound stability has enabled Ian to start planning for the future. He is saving for a car and will soon begin the process of applying for his driver’s license with the help of his support worker, Brad—milestones that once felt unattainable.

Jacinta says, “Reflecting on his journey, Ian feels valued and included at work, and he’s embracing his new responsibilities. It’s given him a real sense of purpose, and he’s genuinely happy with how his life is going now.”

Ian’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact that meaningful employment and a supportive community can have on someone’s life. Through the dedication of Jacinta and the team at are-able, Ian has found a path to recovery and personal growth, transforming his challenges into opportunities. His journey continues to inspire those around him as he builds a brighter future, one step at a time.
