Personal care careers proven path to job satisfaction

An annual survey looking at the dynamics of Australia’s households and labour market has identified that personal service workers – such as childcare workers, aged care support workers and disability support workers – are among the most satisfied when it comes to their career.

The annual Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey released earlier this year showed that approximately 35% of personal carers loved what they did, and did what they loved.

The only careers that ranked higher were occupations that were primarily conducted outdoors; those employed in the agriculture, forestry, fishing, arts and recreation services recorded the highest proportion of job satisfaction; 38% of people in these fields reported that they were ‘very satisfied’ with what they did for a living.

But why is it so important to be satisfied with your career?

Research shows that being happy at work makes you better at your job, and happier in your home life – it helps you achieve a settling work-life balance, even if you work long hours (which many of us do).

The opportunity to be creative, to get things done every day; these are what contribute to a happy workplace and satisfaction with a job.

The opportunity for growth is also important – and that’s where industries like Early Childhood Education, Aged Care and Disability Support offer great promise. Depending on your qualifications and experience, these are sectors that can see employees go from an assistant, to a leader as skills an experience increase.
