Celebrating Indigenous Connection and Collaboration in Mildura

Business Development Officer Reney Hutchins, Employment Consultant William, and four of are-able’s Indigenous clients—Ethan, Michelle, Ray, and Kim—visited the First People of the Millewa Mallee Indigenous Nursery in Mildura.

The group was treated to an inspiring behind-the-scenes look at the nursery’s operations, learning about the intricate processes involved in cultivating native plants tailored to the Millewa Mallee region. From seedlings to full-grown plants ready for wholesale, every stage of the journey showcased the dedication and expertise of the nursery team.

Impressively, the nursery fulfils orders for up to 10,000 trees and plants and has expanded its reach by shipping native plants internationally, including to Africa. This effort not only demonstrates their horticultural skill but also underscores their commitment to preserving and sharing the unique biodiversity of the region.

During the visit, the group learned about the newly launched Ranger program and explored the Yarn Area, a welcoming space where workers and volunteers gather to share stories, enjoy campfire meals, and connect with each other.

Reney Hutchins reflected on the experience, saying, “The visit to the First People of the Millewa Mallee Indigenous Nursery was truly inspiring. Seeing their dedication to reconnecting with Country and preserving native biodiversity was incredible. It’s a testament to the power of cultural pride and community effort.”

The First People of the Millewa Mallee exemplify a deep commitment to reconnecting with Country and take immense pride in their culture, as evidenced by the hard work and passion poured into the nursery’s operations.

are-able extends heartfelt gratitude to Ann and her team for hosting this insightful visit and sharing their incredible work.
