Mark’s Journey: A New Career in Support Work

For years, Mark worked in hands-on, seasonal roles, from koala spotting and wood chip sampling to grading potatoes and grape picking. However, just over a year ago, he surprised his Employment Consultant, Emmalee Cox, with a new ambition—to transition into support work.
Determined to follow this new path, Mark, with Em’s guidance, enrolled in are-able’s Certificate III in Individual Support in March 2024. Committing to two days of study per week, he worked diligently to complete his training with the support of his trainer, Suzanne Roll. Through dedication and persistence, he successfully completed his work placement, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the field.
Now, in January 2025, Mark has stepped into his new role in Personal Support and Community Care at Dhauwurd-Wurrung Elderly & Community Health Service (DWECH). He acknowledges that there has been a lot to learn but says he is loving the journey so far. In addition, Mark has gained further employment at Scope as a Disability Support Worker, expanding his experience and making an even greater impact in the disability sector.
Trainer Suzanne Roll expressed her pride in Mark’s progress:
“Mark enrolled in Certificate III Individual Support/Disability and successfully gained his qualification last week. He has been an excellent learner throughout the year and a valued member of our learning group.
During Mark’s journey, he has taken on many challenges and worked hard to achieve his very best outcomes. He has learned all aspects of individual support and is now applying his skills and knowledge in the workforce, making a real difference in the community.
Mark has now enrolled in his Certificate IV in Disability, where he will extend his expertise in the disability support sector.”
Both Em and Suzanne are incredibly proud of Mark’s commitment, perseverance, and ability to overcome challenges to achieve his goal. His story is a testament to the power of hard work and the right support—an inspiration to others looking to take a new career direction.
Congratulations, Mark!
