Donna’s Inspiring Journey: From Certificate III to Diploma in Early Childhood Education

A Journey of Determination and Community Impact
Donna Chatfield’s remarkable journey with are-able Education and Training is one of resilience, passion, and commitment to her community. A proud Eastern Marr woman, Donna recently completed her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, marking a significant milestone in her career. To celebrate this achievement, Donna presented an art piece she had painted to Liz and Ruth, her trainers at are-able Education and Training. The artwork, symbolising her journey through education, will be proudly displayed in the Warrnambool training room—a reminder of her perseverance and dedication.
Donna began her educational journey with Liz, completing her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. She then progressed to her Diploma under the guidance of Ruth, overcoming challenges along the way, including balancing her studies while being a mother of three and welcoming her youngest child during her Diploma studies.
Donna works full-time at Gunditjmara as a Koori Preschool Assistant (KPSA), caring for Koori children in kindergartens across the Warrnambool City Council and the Moyne and Corangamite Shires. Her role involves running cultural sessions, facilitating playgroups, and leading school holiday programs—positively impacting young lives and promoting her rich cultural heritage.
Beyond her professional role, Donna is a mentor in the netball community, guiding and inspiring others through sport. As a temporary artist known as “EEB SISTA,” she uses creativity to connect with her community and share her story.
Reflecting on her experience with are-able Education and Training, Donna says:
“The trainers worked with me on an individual basis and supported my needs when required. The relationships I built made me feel comfortable and respected as an Aboriginal woman. The trainers were inclusive in their practices, with no judgment. When the work became too hard, my trainer was there to support and gently encourage me. I would recommend are-able to any person who wishes to become an Early Childhood Educator.”
Liz and Ruth, Donna’s trainers, shared their admiration for her journey:
“Donna’s resilience and commitment to her studies, while balancing her family and community responsibilities, are truly inspiring. She has shown great dedication and perseverance. We’re so proud of all she has achieved and the positive impact she’s having on the lives of young children and the community.”
Donna’s dedication to helping her community shines in everything she does. As she puts it, “She thrives to help the community.”
