Building Confidence and Independence: Zac’s First Job Journey

In Swan Hill, 18-year-old Zac Waters has taken a significant step toward independence and a bright future, thanks to are-able Employment Services and the support of his Employment Consultant.
Zac’s journey began as a participant in the SLES (School Leaver Employment Supports) program with Lyndon Chaproniere. After completing Year 12 through the Flexible Learning Options (FLO) program at Swan Hill College, Zac was eager to start his first job. With are-able’s help, Zac secured a role at Swan Hill Wholesalers as a warehouse stock and packing assistant. After 12 months of employment, Zac is finishing his role due to relocation, and his employer has been incredibly supportive during this transition.
Getting started in the workforce wasn’t without challenges, but are-able provided essential support to ensure Zac’s success. They supplied work pants and boots, facilitated clear communication with Zac’s employer, Jason, and helped adjust work hours to fit Zac’s needs.
Zac’s role involves stocking the warehouse and packing orders, a job he has embraced wholeheartedly. To further support his development, are-able is assisting Zac in obtaining a forklift certification and helping him work toward his driver’s license through the Murray Mallee LLEN’s L2P program.
Employment has been transformative for Zac. Not only has it given him a sense of stability, but it has also allowed him to start saving for his future and work toward moving out of home. Zac shared, “Working at the Wholesalers has given me a sense of stability that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Otherwise, I would just be playing games all day.”
This experience has helped Zac grow. “Zac has grown so much and has gained confidence since working. It’s great to see him saving money for his future and gaining independence.”
Zac’s story highlights the importance of personalised support and collaboration in helping young people transition into the workforce. With his new role, growing skills, and increased confidence, Zac is well on his way to building a bright and independent future.
