Zack’s Triumph: From Barriers to Breakthroughs with are-able’s SLES Program

At just 19 years old, Zack Jacobson, a determined young man from Mildura, joined the are-able School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) program to overcome barriers and build a brighter future. One of Zack’s biggest challenges was obtaining his learner’s permit—a goal that felt out of reach for over a year due to feelings of overwhelm.

With dedicated guidance from his Employment Preparation and Engagement Consultants, Zack worked through the modules step by step for two months. The unwavering support he received not only empowered him to pass his learner’s permit test but also allowed him to break a long-standing family cycle—Zack is the first in his family to hold a learner’s permit.

This milestone was more than just a personal achievement; it was a moment of pride and joy shared by his family, who were thrilled to see him break through this significant barrier. Zack’s hard work and determination turned an overwhelming challenge into an inspiring success story.

Tenesha, Zack’s Employment Preparation and Engagement Consultant, shared her thoughts on his journey: “Zack’s determination and willingness to keep trying, even when things felt overwhelming, have been incredible to witness. Supporting him in achieving such a life-changing milestone has been deeply rewarding.”

The guidance and encouragement he received from are-able helped him navigate his challenges, overcome obstacles, and grow in confidence. His mum, speaking on his behalf, highlighted the incredible support Zack received: “The support from the Employment Preparation and Engagement Consultants, has been impeccable.”

Zack’s experience with the SLES program has been a catalyst for personal growth, instilling greater self-belief and opening new doors for his future. From breaking a family cycle to building skills for employment, Zack’s journey showcases how tailored support can empower individuals to reach their full potential.

Zack is excited to continue his journey with are-able, working toward new milestones and preparing for meaningful employment. His journey is also supported by Lifely Plan Coordinator Shane Smythe, who collaborates closely with the are-able team to ensure Zack has all the resources and support he needs.

Congratulations, Zack, on this incredible achievement! Your story is a beacon of hope and an inspiring reminder of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity.
