Moo Khu James – From Refugee to Valued Early Childhood Educator
Moo Khu James, a Karen refugee from Myanmar, has transformed her life and the lives of many in her community through dedication, education, and hard work.
Her journey began at just 16 years old, when her family fled their village in Myanmar due to conflict. After spending four years in a refugee camp on the Thailand border, Moo was granted residency in Australia. Settling in Werribee, she focused on learning English and adapting to her new life.
In June 2022, Moo attended an introductory course in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) through the Centre for Participation in Horsham with are-able education and training, where she connected with Cindy Hammond, a Trainer & Assessor at are-able. Despite initial nervousness about the language barrier, Moo excelled in her studies, earning her Certificate III in ECEC in December 2023.
Today, Moo is an integral part of the Nhill Early Learning Service team and is affectionately known as “Mamma Moo.” She is continuing her studies, working towards a Diploma in ECEC while supporting other Karen families in Nhill. Her journey demonstrates the transformative impact of education and the support provided by are-able education and training.

Through hard work and the guidance of are-able education and training, Moo has become a beloved educator and a pillar of her community. Her story exemplifies resilience, determination, and the power of education to transform lives.
