This moment will honour Tom’s vision for a more accessible community, thank the sponsors, and reflect on the journey that brought the Tom Cummins Stand to life.
About Tom and His Vision
Tom Cummins has lived his whole life in Shepparton, attending local schools and immersing himself in the community. He’s an avid Hawks fan and a dedicated participant in the School Leavers Employment Supports (SLES) program at are-able. Tom lives with Pura Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects mobility, among other physical challenges. Despite these obstacles, Tom has been a force for change, inspiring others with his resilience and dedication to improving accessibility for people with disabilities.
Tom’s vision for an accessible viewing platform was born from his own experiences attending events where he was often limited to obstructed views. His goal? To create an inclusive viewing area where people with mobility aids can enjoy events without the struggle of trying to see past the crowd. This vision, now realized as the Tom Cummins Stand, will provide a safe, elevated space equipped with ramps, lighting, and handrails – a structure designed with accessibility and comfort in mind.
The Journey to the Tom Cummins Stand
Through his involvement with the Greater Shepparton City Council’s MACC group (Music, Arts, and Culture Committee), Tom advocated for this project as a way to bring accessibility to the forefront of event planning. Though initially constrained by budget limitations, Tom’s dedication turned this idea into a community-backed project that has now become a reality.
