A Blossoming Success: Sarah’s Journey to Employment

Sarah, a 20-year-old in the DES (Disability Employment Services) program at are-able, is an example of resilience and growth. Her journey, marked by determination and community support, led to meaningful employment at Worn Gundidj Nursery in Warrnambool.

Sarah started off being supported by are-able in the SLES (School Leaver Employment Supports) program and spent the last 10 months in the DES program. Her dedication saw her volunteer at Worn Gundidj Nursery for two years before earning a paid position. Despite her intellectual disability, Sarah’s enthusiasm and commitment never wavered.

The are-able team, especially her DES Employment Consultant Daniel Kardas, helped Sarah overcome employment barriers. Daniel offered tailored advice on workplace etiquette and customer service and worked with her employer to optimize her schedule to her strengths.

At Worn Gundidj Nursery, Sarah’s diverse role includes planting, maintenance, and customer service. Adjustments to her schedule have enhanced her work experience, particularly in customer service.

Employment has significantly impacted Sarah’s life. She now enjoys increased confidence, independence, and financial stability, allowing her to pay off a car and complete driving lessons. Her achievements highlight the positive change employment can bring.

Daniel Kardas praised Sarah’s progress: “Sarah has made great strides in her employment with Worn Gundidj. It has been rewarding to see her make new friends, learn new skills, and grow in confidence.”

Sarah expressed her gratitude: “Being with DES has helped me get a job. The are-able team provides lots of support to me and my employer. I love my workplace and feel very proud to be part of the workforce.”

Kim Rankine, Nursery Manager at Worn Gundidj, commented on Sarah’s success: “Sarah’s journey from a volunteer to a paid employee has been a remarkable transformation. Her positive attitude and willingness to learn have made her a valued member of our team. We are thrilled to have her with us.”
